Are they supposed to be as old as they look?

Just a quick question while watching this.
Are they really between 25 and 30 (fausto looks at least that old)?
Was it because of a high unemployment rate back then?

Or are the actors just older than their roles (like in many american movies)
so they are supposed to be 20 or something.

edit: ok it seems they are that old because unemployment is a topic throughout the film.

I think they are suposed to be between 25 and 35. Alberto Sordi was 33 when they made the movie. In those days everybody dressed with ties, etc and looked older. There was no "casual/jeans" look.

Fausto mentions he's 30 at one point, and as the "leader" I think he's the oldest. I think I read somewhere that the rest are in their early to mid-20s.

And more than 50 years later the unemployment is back and most young people are in that very same situation. Talk about history as a circle, huh?

Language! The thing that means stuff.

Yes, they are all in their twenties; they're supposed to be the idle sons of moderately well-off families, who have probably got a bit of education but can't be bothered to get jobs.
