I worked on the restoration of this film with an entire team of professionals at Technicolor. I am a visual effects artist/digital compositor. I spent most of my time fixing bad splices, de-warping warped frames, stabilizing shaky shots and bad gate weave, and cleaning dirt and scratches, etc. My part of it was done for about a month in May/June of 2009. Along with the many other processes like fixing grain problems, replacing missing frames, finding missing elements, adding shots that Tati filmed years later (he continually updated the film into the 70's and even has a reference to Jaws in the boat collapse scene) and a lot of dirt fixing, de-flickering, and re-color correcting, the film looked spectacular. We had a private screening for the French Embassy, and the nephew of Jaques Tati ... the French were impressed. This is all off the top of my head ... there is a booklet that was published for the Cannes Film Festival that is beautifully designed and quite comprehensive in detail of the work that went into this restoration. The restoration is not 100% as in most cases because of budget and time constraints, but I believe it is the best restored version yet. And a hilarious film! A pure joy to work on.
