Help me out with this scene, i don't understand....

You know what, the scene that i won't forget easily was when little boy gets his ice cream and walks up stairs that seem like giant obstacles to pass by and once he gets inside, he gives his ice cream to the other kid and just look up at the man on the ladder installing the light bulb. For a long moment, absorbing observation. Are the kids intrigue by it? by what?
Why Jacques Tati? why did this irrelevant scene compels me so much? what was it implying?

(sorry for the double post, i just so darn curious to know)

Really ,ithis scene is just observation; by the lad and by us looking at the lad...
why is he interested? you answered it ,I think, by saying that children see things they way we adults have forgotton - Tati is constantly reminding us of the child inside us - this is his genius - and this simple scene all relates back to what Clown is all about.Whic is what Tati is of course. Hope that helps a little.

I noticed that he didn't drop the ice cream, even when it was upside down when he opened the door? Normally it would do that? It seemed intentional?

I think that's an amazing scene. You can almost feel the kid's fierce concentration on not dropping either icecream, right through the screen.

My own thought is that the scene doesn't really mean anything in relation to M. Hulot or the film as a whole, other than as an affectionate observation of life and something you might see on a seaside holiday. There were lots of scenes like that, between the gags.

You might very well think that. I couldn't possibly comment.

There was also an expositional function, or benefit, of the scene. When he opens the door we see next to it a poster declaring the masked ball, which, as I recall, followed soon afterward.

It's the most wonderful moment, in a film that has many.
