Can't think of a sadder movie ending than this one

I won't give away the ending, but, my God, have you ever seen a movie with a sadder ending? If, like me, you really got into the story and cared about the characters, then the ending will stick with you and haunt you for a good while. That final scene with Kirk Douglas was sad and haunting like no other movie I can remember, to be sure.

Well, suffice it to say, this is one of the reasons I may not have rated it higher than a seven.

I just caught the last 15 minutes of this movie on late night TV, but not having seen the start of it, I can't give a very good review of it. The scenery of post world war II France was done very well. Not having seen the background of the woman and her eventual fate, I did not have any idea about her relationship with Kirk in the movie. The ending scene when she was waiting for Kirk really puzzled me. It seemed as if Kirk was trying to decide whether to meet with her later at a restaurant as he walked around the streets. Then he bumps rather abruptly into an officer who has him arrested by the MP. He makes no apologies or response at having nearly knocked the man down. This was a totally unrealistic scene. Unless you were totally high on drugs or drunk out of your wits could I see such a response as that scene. Then, conveniently, the officer has him arrested as a result of getting bumped.

I can think of many movies with sadder endings than this one. Old Yeller is a classic tearjerker.

If you saw the last 15 minutes of the film you should know Lise's fate since it was the last spoken line in the film.

When he bumped into the officer he had just escaped from a truck taking him to the transport home and was at the bridge waiting for his friend to show up with the forged permission to marry. He was so preoccupied that he didn't notice that he had bumped into an officer, and once the officer called him out on it he apologized profusely but by then the MPs were involved.

It was also sad because notice that in the movie people in a position of power were always messing with others with less power. For example, the Officer with Teller, the Captain with Teller, and the Police with the citizens. Furthermore, notice how the French police replaced the Germans and the Gestapo--it was, "show me your papers" and round ups of citizens on the street. They were all just "KAPOS" for those in power.

I just finished watching it. Heartbreaking. There was such an authenticity to this movie. It will stay with me for a long time.
