Art and female self-sacrifice

This has long been one of my favorite films, and I love the ending, which shows something about the nature of art. Interesting to see how Mizoguchi, who once expressed feminist ideas in his films, now shows the need for female self sacrifice on order for the man to understand the nature of art. But still a beautiful film, the final shot always brings me to tears.

I'm interested in this, would you care to expand? I thought the film was teaching men about war and by extension, given when it was filmed, musing on Japan's actions in WW2. Lady Wakasa says that the fruit of experience is beauty; is this what you mean?
A bird sings and the mountain's silence deepens.
