Lux Radio version

I've listened to the old Lux Radio Theater version of this, with Van Johnson in the lead role. I was really surprised to see that John Wayne had played the role in the movie.

I'll have to rent the DVD now, and compare the two.

Well, I watched the movie, and, I am somewhat surprised to say, I enjoyed it as well as the radio version. I didn't realize John Wayne could have *such* a light touch.

I did enjoy the radio version a little more, just because I love reading, and radio, where you have to make up your own pictures.

Wayne should have played a football coach in at least one other picture. He played football at USC, and it shows that he knows what coaches are like during practice. Those too-few scenes (or is it just one scene?) in the field are or is the best aspect of the film.

I have to say, I liked the relationship with the daughter. It was a pretty unusual slant for the times.

I think that one of the biggest differences you will see is that you can see one and only hear the other!
