Two Favorite Scenes

A) The scene closer to the end when Max is questioning Josy, Lola and the maid about what happened when Riton was injured. I LOVED when Max SLAPPED the maid once, and then lets him have it again once he is done talking. Then he goes and slaps Josy twice, and even slaps Lola when she gets in the way. So Great!

B) The ending chase scene between Max and his crew when they are chasing Angelo shooting at him and his men. This scene is very impressive considering this was made in the 1950's. Much more believable than the cab scene with Esmerelda in Pulp Fiction LOL, but I think that was on purpose.

The slapping scene was the most, agreed. I also enjoyed it when Gabin went to see his uncle, encountered the secretary and the flirting (from both ) begins. Done with humor and loads of French sex appeal.
Astounding that she never did another film.

Who was that girl??! She was a knockout. She had all the makings of a young French Marilyn Monroe.

If you ment Hughette, the secretary, the actress was Delia Scala (check on IMDB) she was my aunt :)

The crackers and pâté scene is the best...I've never seen anything quite like that, and it always makes me giddy.

@Sean That crackers scene made me cry the first time I saw it. Those lovely pajamas, and Jean Gabin's bifocals. What a brilliant movie.

Yes, this was the scene that made me fall in love with the movie. I saw it at a revival theater, The New Beverly in Los Angeles, and just felt this awe as I realized we were going to watch these two men eat pate together. It said so much about their relationship. The slowness of the action, the steadiness of the camera, the understated camaraderie between the actors. Nothing needed to be said. This is true cinematic storytelling.

My favourite scene is when Max goes to Pierrot for help, having caught Fifi. The actor playing Pierrot was fantastic; with minimalist acting he was focused and menacing. I thought Fifi was lucky to get off so lightly. I'm sure Pierrot had all kinds of torture planned.

I second the crackers/'continental breakfast' scene with Max and Riton. I find people eating food on screen so interesting and Gabin looked like he was enjoying the melba toast and pate. Yum!

I liked the final scene too. Max puts on the film;'s theme song, sits down next to Betty in his cream/beige suit, twiddling the knife until she scratches his hand to remind him of her presence.

I give my respect to those who have earned it; to everyone else, I'm civil.
