Should they have shown the heist?

I love this film...after a third viewing, I feel confident putting it above Rififi and Bob le Flambeur. Becker deserves the utmost respect for this unique, tremendously influential gangster tale (as well as Casque d'Or and Le Trou).

I realize that the heist itself is unimportant when it comes to the narrative, but I think that it would have made for a hell of an exposition. A suspenseful, near wordless sequence where Max's cool, meticulous precision is juxtaposed with Riton's spastic lack of refinement would have been an excellent introduction to their characters.

Adore the film as is, but giving us the heist would have been awesome.

Probably wouldn`t have hurt. Especially as the first half of the film`s kind of low on any manner of intrigue & action. Very good film - even though I`d rank both Bob Le Flambeur & Rififi slightly above it.

I loved about the film that it takes about 20 Minuten until it is made clear that the protagonists are gangsters and another 15 Minutes until the gold is first mentioned. This slow build-up and the long uncertainty about what is going on was my favourite part of the movie.

I didn't like the film but I think it would have been better if they did show it.
