A Classic

I liked the set design, costume and acting. Yes, I was shocked at the black-face stage routine; especially being a 1953 production. I thought Joan Crawford and Michael Wilding were excellent and that they rose above the script. Joan Crawford put a lot of her heart into this movie and it shows.

She also left a lot of tooth marks where she chewed the scenery. Talk about over acting!

I'm sorry, but I have to agree. She WAY over-acted in this movie. I know she was supposed to have played an angry, bitter woman who had to fight for everything that she got. But, she was too old for the part first and foremost and her sour attitude bled through the screen and made it look way over the top; and not in a good way.

I think that goes with the character, Jenny Stuart is very haughty, bossy and temperamental, she's very sure of her quality and expects everyone to be up to her level. Deep inside her she's lonely but she hasn't realized no one ever approaches her because of that. Only Tye Graham who secretly loves her makes her notice that. I think you can't avoid comparing Joan and Jenny Stewart since Jenny had a lot in common with Joan in real life, I didn't think she overacted, nor she was too old. She was approaching 50 and had wonderful legs, I think her shape fits the charactet very well.

The role would have been better suited for a triple threat: someone who could sing, dance and act. While I think Joan did her level best, it was just bad dancing, no singing and overacting. The movie might have been a hit with another leading lady. I just don't know what the heads at Metro were thinking!!

I think Maureen O' Hara, Ann Miller or Rita Hayworth would have been great
