I fell in love with Tomi Hirayama

I felt Chieko Higashiyama, the mother, was absolutely amazing. She was so cute, sweet, simple and lovely that I was in tears everytime something bad happened to her. I have never been affected so deeply by a character before. Her character was superbly written and performed.Throughout the movie I knew that something tragic was going to happen to her and it saddened me deeply. One of the most memorable faces on film that I shall always remember.

I too was touched by her sweetness and essential decency. She and Noriko and the young daughter Kyoki were my favorites of course, and the father as well. I guess this movie polarized the family a bit into heroes and villains, and yet it was so true to life and authentic, I didn't want to say goodbye to any of them really.

Definitely a lovely character... that moment at the Atami springs, when she is feeling dizzy, is already hinting at a near death.
