Death of a loved one

Many films have a sympathetic character who dies, but it rarely ever rings true. Tokyo Story was one of those films that recreates the feeling of a loved one dying. I'm struggling to think of other films that achieve this. Any suggestions?

Although not exactly the feeling of someone dieing, the only time i've ever felt such intense a feeling in any movie was at the end of Kurosawa's Redbeard, when Otoyo calls into the well; it didn't feel as though I was watching an actor, but an actual person. And damn it was like a knife to the heart.

Another Ozu.. "Tokyo Twilight"

before I watched 'Tokyo Story', I had watched Bertolucci's 'The Sheltering Sky'. there was another death scene (Malkovich's) in that movie too. And I find it quite similar indeed?

i felt that way about Dustin Hoffman's character in Midnight Cowboy.

I agree with ajay81--definitely Ricco in Midnight Cowboy.

Longtime Companion. Bruce Davison's character urges his dying lover to just let go. It's very moving.

How Green Was My Valley. Mr. Morgan dies in his son's arms.

"The night was sultry."

All the suggestions above are wonderful. I also think of "The Namesake" with Kal Penn and Irrfan Khan.

Satiajyt´s Ray Apu´s Trilogy has a main character dying in every movie and it really gets you everytime.

Staying in Japan the main character´s death in Ikiru, though happening offscreen, is also pretty powerful.
