Stanwyck

I typically enjoy her performances. Indeed, her being in it was the chief reason I watched the film. But... meh. Decent, I suppose, but barely -- often poor. Tremendously disappointing.

Guess I'm a bit late to answer your post, but I thought she was awesome, as usual. Love the elegant way she delivered her lines, especially. What I couldn't buy was why such an amazing lady like that would feel attracted to someone like Clifton Webb (?!), but then again, they were both supposed to be slowly breaking up at the time (well, after 20 years...).

Yes, I too thought she gave a great performance . . . she really adds to the movie . . . helps carry the production in a big way . . .

Thanks! She was the main reason why I wanted to buy this movie on DVD. I thought it would be interesting -to say the least- to watch her in a "disaster" movie, and she gave a huge emotional depth to a love story that otherwise could have looked too fake. And I must confess I don't remember having seen her play a mother but a femme fatale most of the time, so that was another thing that caught my attention. I must say she did a great job, and one of her last scenes, when she realized she lost his son forever, it truly broke my heart. I've read on the "Trivia" section that she really felt sad when recreating the sinking scenes and thinking of the lots of people who died during that tragedy. You can truly tell her crying was honest, and that makes me respect her both as an actress and as a human being all the more.

She does add a lot to the film . . . without her in it, I don't think it would've been as good . . .

I (so far) have not seen a movie with Barbara Stanwyck that I didn't like. At least her performance if not the actual film. She must have been quite a lady. She always seems natural and believable.

Yes, she's very good in this movie, makes it a success . . . without her in it I don't know if the film would have succeeded so well . . .

The real world Clifton Webb wouldn't attract the kind of woman Miss Stanwyck played here, but Webb's screen personna here is that of the typical genteel and prosperous businessman such as flourished from the late 19th Century until WWI. Women married his type because they were well-to-do and eligible. Webb's character isn't Webb himself and the character, when a younger man, must have had more to offer in a marriage (besides his wealth) than Clifton Webb himself, who, suffice it to say, was a lifelong bachelor.

Okay folks, show's over, nothing to see here!
