Only 5.2 Rating? Ridiculous

As of today, 5/30/2008, this movie has garnered only a 5.2 rating. Since there are only a few posters/messages on this board, I can only assume that some people were giving it a negative rating based simply on the fact that it was a Riefenstahl film.
I don't have all the facts about the "gypsies" brouhaha and the few stories I've seen seem to contradict each other.
I can only judge this film based on what I viewed and that was enough for me to go ahead and give this movie a much higher rating, which it justly deserves.
The photography was absolutely stunning and surreal at times. I'll admit that Riefenstahl was too old for the part (which she readily admitted later on, but given the circumstances at the time of filming...she was basically the only one she felt could do the role correctly). The sensuality of the film was surprising and overwhelming at times. All of the lead actors were memorable in their roles, including the newcomer who played the part of Pedro (the shepherd)in a believable manner.
I'm sure if I were to analyze this film much deeper I could find some flaws to point out, but I choose not to do so at this time. I felt the 5.2 rating was an insult to this well-done film and I'm going to give it a well-deserved rating of 8.

Well, a 5.2 rating is a little low IMHO. However, the problem with Riefenstahl's age is not as small an issue as some make it out to be. "Pedro", her main love interest is considerably younger than her, and this gave a major sub-plot in the story of the older woman/younger man theme; which was actually NOT intended in this movie. This "older woman/younger man" theme seems to be a 1940s version of "The Graduate"- the 1967 movie with Dustin Hoffman and Anne Bancroft. And, Riefenstahl plays a "Mrs Robinson" (or is it "Mrs. Riefenstahl"?) in this film.

Interesting film though. And, it is interesting to hear Leni Riefenstahl talk about the filming of it some 50 years later. However, she should not have taken so long to complete it. I believe it was Goebbels, the Nazi propaganda minister, who complained about Riefenstahl taking too long and too much money to make her films. Ironically, it is probably the only subject that I agree with him on.

Actually, some say, and it's not so far-fetched, that she deliberately stretched the production time because she knew some of the crew members, including personal friends of her, would be conscripted and send to the front when filming was finished.

Yes you are, but don't be so hard on yourself because you probably don't even know what the word "brouhaha" means....

That rating seems about right for a dull film with little but stylish photography to commend it. Compared to Riefenstahl's documentaries, or even The Blue Light, it's completely forgettable.

I'm afraid that you underestimate the number of subjects in which I take an interest!
