Why has Mike Yurkil killed Vance Edmonds anyway?

He ran away directly after he shot him? And when Johnny Kisco came to Fairbanks at the end of the movie all he did when he heard that Johnny Kisco is at his bar was to run away. So why killing Vance Edmonds when he hadnt any advantage at all of that killing?
