It's on TCM right now...

...and despite the raves of Ben Mankiewicz and that clown, Leonard Maltin, I'm not impressed.

Yep.

I've joined it in the middle of the picture. The acting and exposition are somewhat plodding, but I would watch it again for the gorgeous B&W film noir cinematography and lighting.

Well, I just finished watching the movie and I loved it. I watch a lot of movies on TCM because I love movies in general and older ones especially. I DVR all the movies I watch so I can fast forward through the introductions that often accompany the movies.

It's not that I don't enjoy hearing the background info, I do; I just don't want to hear or read anything about a movie I'm about to see. I mostly go by the title and/or the actor. In this case it was the title since I didn't recognize any of the actors' names.

The point I'm making is movies are entirely different when you're told what to expect or given details before seeing the movie. I like to make up my own mind then after it's done I like to hear what others might have to say. That's when I restart the movie and listen to the intro and the end comments. It makes a huge difference.

As I'm typing this I'm listening to Ben Mankiewicz and Leonard Maltin's discussion. They're not raving about the movie. In fact Maltin says it's not a great movie. What he does say is the movie drew him in. That's exactly how I felt watching the movie.

I never decide what to watch based on what a critic has to say. Again, I like to make up my own mind about a movie and avoid hearing, seeing, or reading anything about it until after I've seen it. Obviously, that's easier done with older movies but just as I enjoy discussing movies here after I've seen them I do enjoy getting varied perspectives; including from critics. Other people can add a new dimension to the movie that I may not have considered.

As I listen to this discussion I think they're spot on. They talk about how the directors from the past were good at telling a story in a concise way. Unlike the directors today, they didn't usually let their ego get in the way. Every movie didn't have to be a big, production like the blockbusters of today. I've said before I think those blockbusters have a lot of flash but lack a good story.

I'll just say it again. This is a really good movie. I think I like it better than Ben and Leonard. I think it's well-made, entertaining, and also manages to be informative. It's interesting to see an undocumented alien, who happens to be an American, undergoing the struggles of managing life; trying to survive under the radar. He can't even do the right things, like report a crime. It's a very timely issue.
