Feldwebel Schultz

Yes, "Feldwebel."

I submitted a request to have a so-called goof removed from the "Goofs" section. The goof is that someone wrote stating that "Schultz wears an Unteroffizier" insignia.

This is incorrect. In the German Army, only Sergeants wore rank on the shoulder or epaulette, what they call a "shoulder strap." The lowest Sergeant wore lace around the outer part of the epaulette but not on the bottom of it or the part adjacent to the arm, a higher grade of Sergeant would wear lace around the entire epaulette. A yet higher grade wore a "pip" or diamond and NOT a star, another mistake in this explanation!

If Schulz wore lace on the shoulder he IS a "Feldwebel" or Sergeant. The lowest Sergeant equivalent to a buck Sergeant in the US Army. "Unteroffizier" or Corporals wore rank on their left arm. A white chevron on dark green background for Corporals, a white "pip" or diamond and NOT a star on a green round background for Lance Corporals. See Feldgrau.net which is one of the most complete websites on the German Army of the Second World War.

Feldwebel insignia was shoulder straps fully enclosed by lace with a single star or diamond-shaped "pip". Unteroffizier was no pip and with the base of the shoulder straps without lace. I think Schultz wore Unteroffizier rank markings so it is indeed a goof.

Unteroffizier marks of rank here, clearly.
