Wish I hadn't seen this so late

I wish I hadn't seen Through A Glass Darkly first, because I had such high expectations for Harriet Andersson. The film is so beautifully shot, especially a few of the early scenes on the street and obviously, those where they've run off, but it comes across as plain. It's obviously an age old story of young love, but the turn towards the end, while true to life in so many ways, turned the emotions too quickly for me. I realize it's based on a novel, but it just felt like the rug was pulled out from under us, as it was Harry. Still a wonderful film, but so far, my least favorite of Bergman's work.

jonhopper217,

You beat me to it. I just saw Summer with Monika early this morning before I went to work. I've been watching Bergman's films in order now and finally got to this one. Ingmar Bergman is/was a very engaging filmmaker. I love the shot with Monika towards the end where the man lights up her cigarette and she looks directly towards the camera - so hypnotic. It is almost as if Harriet Andersson is staring deep into your soul, telling you what have I done and how far I have fallen to get to a point like this. It is so beautiful yet simultaneously, very tragic.

It is such a great movie but I'll see if I like it as much once I get to Bergman's later films.

Cast Away...It's like Forrest Gump, but on an island.
