The movie Harry and Monika watches

In the beginning of the movie, the two main characters go to the cinema, and we get a short view of this "movie in the movie". As I remember, it is an American movie, some kind of a weepie, which Monika really likes, but Harry mostly like being with Monika.
Does anybody know what movie they're watching? It is not mentioned in the Imdb movie connection section.

The movie is "Song of Love".

The movie is "Song of Love".
And very hammy it looked too

reply

It isn't Song of Love. I watched that movie just a few days ago. I don't know the name of the film anyway.

Can't believe I didn't even spot that it was Kate Hepburn...

I think it's a fake movie. The dialogue (spoken in stilted English) is intentionally over-the-top corny to underline Monika's weakness for cheap romantic fantasies.

reply

ofumalov, I believe you´re right.

The hero in the fake movie, played by a Swede, is dubbed by John Padovano (listed on the ImdB) according to the official Swedish filmography, published in a series of books in Sweden (one volume per decade 1896-1999).

I thought it had to be fake too, but a very funny parody of a poorly conceived American flick.
Some movies really are too bad to be real, but this felt like my leg was being pulled.

Its actually a real film called Dream Girl: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0040302/ not Somebody to Love.

Don't know why they say its called Somebody to love in the movie(perhaps is the Swedish name for the film?)

reply

In the Criterion release, it is correctly called "Dream Girl". Perhaps a lazy subtitler mis-translated on an earlier release?
