I would not say a masterpiece, but a very good movie nonetheless.

8.5/10 on my score card.

I don't know whether it's "typical" or not, but it's definitely a masterpiece, in my opinion.

9.6/10

(Yes, I am a nit-picker.)

There nothing typical about Sommaren med Monika.

It's a great film, not among Bergman's greatest but among the best films of it's kind ever made. And it's certainly highly influential anticipating the films made by the French New Wave and later.

I've just finished watching it and while it's more accessible and, at face value, straightforward than some of Bergman's work, it's a hugely affecting, very distinctive story. Lars Ekborg and Harriet Andersson give enormously engaging performances and there are some wonderful moments. A lovely film - and not minor Bergman at all. 9/10 for me.

I read it was the most watched Igmar Bergman film in the US. I can't wait to buy a copy of this masterpiece.

I agree, I thought it was really great. 10/10.

I found Summer with Monika to be a thought provoking film showing in a realistic fashion the consequences of individual actions. In this case Harry attempting a serious relationship with Monika yet fails due to her personality and the birth of their child.

Being a big Bergman fan, I sort of backfilled with this one, having only recently seen it for the first time. I am familiar with other efforts by Harriet Andersson, though, so among other things it was interesting to see her younger, earlier in her career.

I will want to see it again, but found it excellent while not among the best by Bergman. Interesting how you could see him developing his craft. The landscape shots were if anything most advanced, yet the interior shots were also wonderful. In particular I did not expect the way Stockholm looked so wonderful as they left for the summer, and more foreboding when they returned. The subjectivity of the couple changed the appearance of the world around them (at least in their eyes, of course).

Both leads were excellent, but if there was anything exceptional about this film, it was of course Harriet's performance. What an eye opener it must have been at the time, and still is. One of hte more influential performances out there, at least if you listen to French new wave directors. I can see their point.

It was a great film. It seems that it inspired bits of Moonrise Kingdom. The ending just seemed to come quickly and abruptly and hurts it a little bit imo.

One of the best films of Ingmar Bergman. Once seen never forgotten. http://is.gd/qTosBF
