Was Jean Arthur really in her 50's in this?

Born 1900 - so 52 or 53 in this movie? Wow. She looks so young in this! Like 30's.

I agree. I hope she treated her makeup artist well. She was old enough to be Joey's grandma, not his mother.

Interesting. You're afraid of insects and women. Ladybugs must render you catatonic.

She was probably even older. IMDB gives her birth year as 1900, but that isn't necessarily true. I've seen her birth year, in some sources, listed as 1897. However, whenever she was born, she was eternally youthful; she was a real charmer.

She could have fooled me. It was quite a brave, but successful casting decision on Steven's part.🐭

Arthur was a much bigger star in the 40's than Ladd. In the 30's she was maybe the biggest in the biz (arguable). By the 50's it was pretty much over for her but she had a sensational career working with most of the leading men a few times each.

She is a lot like you, the dangerous type...

'Shane' was actually shot between July and October 1951 (Stevens tended to devote a lot of time to the editing of his films), so whatever her correct date of birth you need to knock a couple of years off her age (three actually, since her birthday fell in October).

I noticed that her make up was heavy. I think stevens wanted an attractive woman, but not a glamorous one for the part. van Heflin was underrated.

I recently saw the film again and as I said earlier, you could have fooled me. She really doesn't look anywhere near 50, 51 or whatever.🐭

reply

she doesn't look 50, but her make up was heavy, and I believe she wore a wig. nonetheless; she was a great actress actrss, and right for the part. you'll notice her nose wasn't perfect. she was an attractive woman; but certainly, younger, more attractive women were available. however, she was perfect in the part of a hog farmer's wife. to bad this was her valedictory film. I understand she taught acting at a major university for the remainder of her working life.

Her close-ups were shot with a screen/soft-focus, which was used quite a bit in those days for the ladies. Agree that for her age she looked very good at any rate and was a nice casting choice- helped by the fact Stevens had worked with her before.
