My eyes hurt...

It's on right now, and the guy who's cast as John the Baptist NEVER BLINKS! I swear, he just went without blinking for four or five minutes straight, he just stared heavensward WITHOUT BLINKING while the other actors ranted at him! Just watching makes my eyes hurt.

Damn, these fifties biblical epics are like a Festival Of Bad Acting.

I was thinking why did he have to hold his eyes so wide open.

I think these 50s Biblical epics were just 'victims' of the decade...."Solomon and Sheba" which is on TCM now is another example IMO.

Yes, I didn't care for John the Baptist much (what kind of accent did he have???? Maybe it was just me), and thought Salome's dance should have been a lot different too....etc.

All in all though, I liked it much better than I thought I would....

Was this movie a hit????

Forget about the inaccurracies, the overacting- just enjoy the lavish costumes and sets and the beautiful Rita.

"Salome" was maybe the biggest hit of the 1952-53 movie year for Columbia studio, but only just big enough to get into Hollywood's twenty or thirty biggest overall at the box-office. It helped propel Rita Hayworth to 25th top star that year (with only one other film to her credit) and Stewart Granger to 21st.

Regarding Alan Badel (as John the Baptist), he was one of the most respected theatre actors of his time, and for good reason. One must not always judge acting/directing style from the point of view of "realistic" wookies or c-3po's or many other modern actors who can blink many times to the minute -- but what is good for the production in its own time.

I'm watching it now. He doesn't blink! It's freaking me out!

Watching the heavenward gaze and shining eyes of several characters made me realize where Monty Python's 'Life of Brian' got it from. I found the film hilarious and could not believe that it had a cast of major actors.
