was the horrible picture quality!
I've seen a lot older movies than this one and they had superior light effects and picture quality. It looks as though they made this movie with very lousy equipment.

Maybe you saw a bad print or something. I just watched the Criterion Collection DVD (not HD) and it looked fine.

I thought the quality of the film was fine. BUT in some parts it was poorly lit.

Nah, you must have seen some kind of bad version of it. The picture quality was pretty good from what I saw.

You must have gotten a bad version. The picture quality was excellent on the DVD I watched last night.

Watch the movie again today.

It is on TCM mid-afternoon.

This is a great film and you should watch it and see if the TCM gives you a better "picture quality".



I just watched the Criterion Collection print and it looks perfect

I agree!

The Criterion Collection re-master is crystal clear. The sound is also great.

The only poor thing, in my opinion, is the too-small subtitles, which make following the French language sections quite difficult to follow.

All in all, though...a good (if not quite accurate) version of the great novel, by Georges Arnaud.
