Did an Ambrose Bierce story inspire the ending?

There was a story by Ambrose Bierce that I read years ago (I can't remember the title, unfortunately), where a soldier survives one harrowing battle after another during the Civil War, only to die while breaking his neck on a rope swing over the creek while celebrating the end of the war.

I've often wondered if that story inspired the ending to this film.

Nope. That story is pretty famous - "An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge" - and the ending is another kind of ironic... The entire escape and survival narrative was going through the mans mind in the moments before he was hanged.
