That the German's would take a man prisoner ... and then not lock him up. They must have been pretty stupid.

Brown was a prisoner, as you say, and as he (and Stokes) were injured, they were under guard in the sick bay.

Remember the scene where the armed guard took Brown up on deck, for some fresh air?

True, he wasn't locked up in the brig, or in chains, but there was (to the Germans) little hope of him escaping.....
