I must, yet I cannot

I know this film has a reputation for cheesiness, but I found it effecting me on an emotional level, because it's so bleak and grim. The few surviving humans have no hope whatsoever, and they are mostly killed by something they can't fight; the actor who plays the professor is just slightly too classy for the film, and comes across as sincere, and I felt sorry for him (both the character and the actor). In fact I can't really watch it any more, it just gets me down, even with Joel and the bots.

I know what you mean. there's something genuinely, intensely depressing about it.

Yeah, it is actually quite bleak, but, in case you didn't know, it has a happy ending, if you can believe it. Don't want to ruin it for you, but it's wonderfully clichéd. And the ending twist is probably the best example of how bad the movie is -- it also gives rise to the "deja vu" riff, which is actually my favorite in the whole MST3K episode. So you really should try to finish it, if you haven't done so yet.

Same, I found the end (not the very end, when he walks at the screen) the best part.

Didn't really feel any melancholy from the film - The vapid characters probably had a lot to do with it. I mean, they're the last six people on Earth and they carry on like the Brady Bunch. There's even a scene when the couple start making out in an empty field despite the fact that they know full well that the Ro-Man is in the area and dead set on completing his extermination of the human race.

Agreed about the professor being the most interesting character. He was the only one that seemed like he understood the gravity of the situation. The scene where he urges Alice not to meet with the Ro-Man is especially true of this. Here's a being that's just murdered two billion people and she agrees to meet it without a second thought, almost as if she's just been asked out on a date.

Does anyone else think that the "I must, but I cannot" speech sound like a summary of Bill Clinton's presidential career?

Bill Clinton's coming back to the White House! Quick, hide all of the female interns!!

reply

No, but I do think people who try to inject their political views into every conversation are boring.
