R S M Cameron (Scotts Guards)

I know that this may sound trivial but why was R S M Cameron refered to as Sergeant Major when as a W O 1 he would have been refered to as Mister by the Officers and Sir by the Other Ranks, just a thought but from my service days this was the norm,I would welcome any views on this subject.

I am wondering if this was for the layman's benefit, to help the average viewer discern who was ranked above others perhaps ? I, for one, would not have the knowledge that you have and would never have questioned the calling of him as a Sgt. Major. Then again, i'd rather they had been more factually accurate with these things as it should be.

It's possible times have changed since the movie was made but unless he's a warrant officer first or second class he is NOT entitled to be called sir.

Sergeant Major, nothing more.

He's not wearing stripes so he probably is a WO1, the crest on his sleeve looks like one.

All Warrant Officer Class 1 are refered to as sir by other ranks and Mr by the Officers, this was the term in my Service Days which was in the 1950s.
