Unsatisfying Ending
I would have preferred to see the unit return to their home base and have Ladd hook up with his squeeze as the climactic ending.
There was no closure.
You do not know how to interpret film nuances.
When the paratroopers are taking their parachutes prior to the Africa mission, she is trying to give him a parachute and he is shunning her, her friend is shunning him so he has to turn to her. That means she will continue trying.
Then the airplane catches fire, they take parachutes and arms away. They run to another plane, and he finds a note from her. He looks at her and both smile at each other. That means they will be seeing each other if he comes back from the war.
Unlike you I did like the ending.
