Human to Neanderthal Transformation

Transformation appeared to be borrowed from Lon Chaney Wolfman movies with gradual buildup of facial hair and looked pretty good during the process. However in later scenes NM looked more like someone with pullover rubber mask. Why would a good thing be ruined like that?
