Finally on DVD! (5/27/14)

The Mississippi Gambler has finally received its first-ever home video release in the U.S.

Universal has just released the film on its Universal Vault Series MOD line, which seems the logical venue for this movie. Like all Vault titles it's available exclusively from Amazon. Retail price is $19.99 but as it usually does with all new DVD releases from the Series, Amazon has it on sale for $15.99 for a short time from the day of its release (May 27, 2014). Of course, other sales may come later.

The Mississippi Gambler was Universal's top-grossing film of 1953 and got good reviews as well. Yet for some inexplicable reason the studio has never until now brought it out on any form of home video, not even VHS, a format in which Universal issued many films still not on DVD. There was an official DVD release in Spain, but its quality is so poor (the sound in particular repeatedly fades out) that it's acceptable only for the minimal reason of having the movie. Thankfully this new DVD obviates the need to buy the Spanish edition.

I'd wondered whether Universal might release this film in honor of star Tyrone Power's centenary, which occurred earlier this month (May 5, 2014). And so it has. A few weeks late, but here it is...as I said, finally!
