I'm sure I had read somewhere that Somerset Maugham liked her portrayal of Sadie Thompson the best.

I completely agree. I can't imagine anyone else doing as good a job as Rita in this role.

I agree. Of all the versions of "Rain" I've seen, Rita's performance
comes off as the most natural and therefore the most realistic.
The others (especially Joan Crawford's) are too "whorish"- in other
words no self-respecting hooker would act so cheap- okay, maybe if she
was incredibly drunk.
