Where is this?

Apart from DVD-Rs on eBay, this seems pretty lost now - although I did see it in 3-D once as part of a film festival!

Anyone else who's seen it think the framing is very odd? Some shots of Kitty's aunt have giant expanses of ceiling over her head while she's talking...

Shame about the ending though, it's too easy to laugh at now, both the "thing" and the explanation.

Thank God I am not the only one who's noticed this. There are some shots of Kitty's aunt where her head barely makes it into frame. As a videographer, I know that one of the cardinal sins is shooting someone with too much headroom; it makes them look like they are falling out of frame. Very strange indeed.

I'm sure the director William Cameron Menzies intended those shots for a 3-D effect (Aunts's head in forground contrasts with all the background space). It stands out for perspective in the 3-D print (also seen at a festival in 2006).

Beyond the 3D effect, I believe a psychological effect was intended, too. In a film called THE MAZE, it's easy to read out some comment on the influence of architecture and one's general surroundings on the individual. Those surroundings could also be taken as the social structure one is raised in. It's been several years since I last saw the picture, but that's the gist of my impression at the time.

I actually thought the aunt was filmed at the head only because at the end we would see her legs and they would be like what is at the conclusion of this movie, the secret.......

reply

Hehe, that's a nice one.
I can see her having goat's legs, partly to blame is a satan-worshipping ancestor.
