I watched it last night and was very impressed

I love these old post WW2 movies involving Germany and Berlin. The scenery shots were beautiful. I'm glad I caught this movie. It reminded me of the one Michael Caine was in a bit when he played Harry Palmer.

Outcast of the Islands is very good, but anyone putting that one above The Third Man must be crazy.

1) The Third Man - wins by a country mile, this is in my top 20.

2) Odd Man Out - excellent film even if I can't really sympathize with the IRA, has some great cinematography especially in the apt building with a broken skylight and snow falling in the stairway

3) Our Man in Havana - the humor and notion of governments using people worked just fine for me

4) The Fallen Idol - yep, the annoyance of that kid knocked this one down quite a bit for me, though it is an otherwise excellent film

4.5) The Man Between - excellent, though I have some issues with some idiotic mistakes on the characters' part in the last 5 minutes of the film idiot kid circling like a buzzard is like painting a bullseye on his friend's getaway/ did the driver really have to turn off the motor so that it could not restart at the worst possible time (a tired movie cliche to heighten drama, as overused as people dropping their keys while trying to open locks in crucial moments). If Ivo has to die that's fine, but have the filmmakers find a less idiotic way for it to happen. Still, it's not as bad as the ridiculous phony ending to Howard Hawks' 'Red River'.

6) Outcast of the Islands - still an excellent film and a very good concept

I'll have to see more of Carol Reed's films. I must thank Criterion and TCM for getting me into them. I love his musical Oliver! but thought it odd to even attempt to rate it against Reed's thriller/spy movies. Apples to oranges indeed.

#1-3 make my top 300
#4-6 make my top 1,250 (I watch a lot of films and decided to make a top 1500 [divided into blocks of 250 films] to give friends film recommendations and remember which dvds I still need to buy)
