DVD in AUSTRALIA Region 4 BEAUTIFUL TRANSFER

I live in Australia and currently enjoy many films like this on DVD released legitimately here not available in other countries. First get a multi region player then check e-bay or one of the mail order DVD companies in Australia. Good luck!

Can you give me the names of some of the DVD companies in Australia? I collect Mason films and some of his early ones are not available here. Thank you.

reply

Try Umbrella Entertainment (first) and Icon Film (second).

Thank you. I did manage to find two here, but they are not the best quality.

Yes, I have many Umbrella titles and it can be hit and miss. Example was the BMX Bandit with Nicole Kidman. It was first released as part of the Ozploitation set of films. A 1.33:1 transfer that looked like a second generation VHS. They later re-released it in BD with correct AR and better transfer but still leaves a bad taste in ones mouth. Umbrella have the sole rights to the Ghost and Mrs Muir series which they have released on DVD. The sets are not cheap and personally I'm not prepared to fork out the dollars until I see a preview. Interestingly I confabbed with another movie collector who reckoned the US DVD releases of movies are always better quality than the Oz releases. I'm inclined to agree with him. I've also noted that most US releases have English subs whereas Umbrella, Reel Corporation etc. invariably don't. With a hearing impaired father my dollars tend to get spent overseas for this very reason.

Umbrella Entertainment listed only one Mason film (Age of Consent), which I already have. Icon Film appears to have no search box where I could narrow my search, so I gave up on that one. The problem is that I am looking for old Mason films from the 40's mostly, and even though they are available, some are barely watchable, egs. "The Mill on the Floss", "I Met a Murderer", "Lady Possessed", "Alibi" (a shame they don't restore this one, as it is the first teaming of Lockwood and Mason),and until recently, "The Night Has Eyes" - the good news here is that Network just came out with a beautifully restored print. Most of his 1930's movies are in the vault at BFI and unavailable for viewing (not even for research purposes). Until they are restored (don't hold your breath), they will remain in the vault. I did have one spectacular success. The Reuben Library has a restored print of "Catch as Catch Can" available for public viewing, and this film is nowhere else available on the entire planet! So, even though it is a crappy example of a quota quickie, I'm pleased that I was able to view it while in London. I've rambled on enough.
