Donati directed The Bicycle Thief(1948) !!?!!!

While watching the movie I kept thinking how much I liked the guy playing Donati. I was surprised to look up and see that it was Vittorio De Sica, the great director of The Bicycle Thief(1948)(or Bicycle Thieves depending on translations.) Did this surprise anyone else? Great actor and amazing director!!!

Not to those who know DeSica. He was always admired and feted as one of Italy's greatest actors and for some, a better actor than a film-maker.

Check out one of his most underrated films, The Gold of Naples, one of the episodes has a great comic performance by the man who plays a aristocract with a gambling addiction(based on DeSica's real-life experiences at the card tables).

It surprised me a bit the first time, since the only movie with De Sica as an actor that I'd seen before that was The Biggest Bundle of Them All.

Hahaha.

De Sica made nearly 160 movies as an actor, beginning in the silent era, and was one of the leading matinée idols of the Italian screen in the 1930s—even in musical films; he sang rather well and had at least one huge hit—long before he became one of the great auteurs in Italian neo-realist films of the post-war era. In this latter capacity he directed 36 films, some very famous indeed.

Most Italians of a certain age will always think of De Sica as a great screen actor.
