Didn't this movie have a really scary moment?

I saw it as a kid, on TV in the early 70s. I don't remember much about it, but there was this scene with a little boy climbing up a hillside. A man is following him, his face concealed by a cowboy hat, and the little boy thinks he's about to be saved. Then, coming up close, the man reveals his face to show he's the psychotic killer!

I screamed like I was watching a good horror flick. I remember thinking how cool this was, such a chilling moment in a 1950s cowboy flick.

I was watching this last night, I think on that newish "GRIT" network. The little boy is being pursued by who he thinks is his father, gone nuts. He turns around in one area on the rocks and it's one of the outlaws he witnessed earlier killing someone. You really think it is his father though up until then.

Ironically the villain is played by James Arness who is later the hero in the tv series Gunsmoke.
