I will also be thinking about this film for some time. With a film-maker like Melville, you don't want to say, "This is his masterpiece," because, of course, he has quite a few very (and rightly) celebrated movies. But this is quite unlike any of his other films, and brilliant in its own way. I would not hesitate to say, "It is among his masterpieces- and perhaps the most unique of them."
