king of the khyber rifles

Has Fox lost prints or are they too dilatory to reissue on DVDs some of their
early CimemaScope movies. there are some that are available but I am sure that agood reprint of these films such as the one above would yeild a great deal of interest. I must only hope that with the passing of time items have not been
disgarded or not kept in the requisite manner.

This was on AMC in the US a week ago. I put it on the DVR, and watched it for the first time. It was good fun and I hope it comes out on DVD.

I have seen a dub of this film. The opening titles are in Cinemascope (very widescreen, probably 2.35:1 at least), but after the titles are over, the screen dimensions suddenly revert to what looks like a typical Panavision ratio (i.e., 1.85:1). Was this the way it was shown on TV?

reply

The great news is that this long lost movie has finally turned up on DVD in Spain of all places. And rest assured it is a gorgeous transfer in a wonderful sharp 2.35 format. It looks like Blue Ray!
The only thing that could be a drawback for some, it is region 2. It can be had from DaaVeeDee but ignore their spec on the movie where they say it is full screen. It isn't! They are mistaken - it is full widescreen - and how.

reply

King of the Khyber Rifles was filmed with an aspect ratio of 2.55:1. The narrower 2.35:1 aspect ratio was not introduced until 1955.

reply

Both the Spanish DVD and the recently released British DVD are 4 x 3 letterbox presentations...that is, a 2.35:1 wide screen image inside a 4 x 3 frame. But, although it isn't anamorphically enhanced for wide screen televisions, it is a nice, clear transfer with excellent sound quality on both releases.
