new Criterion version

This is made available by Netflix. The costumes are among the most beautiful I've ever seen in a Japanese period piece. Some reviewers thought the transfer was deficient and that the sound was poor. I don't know what they base that on. The image was clear and the color was beautiful, not faded out like can happen in some old films.
Someone else said the acting wasn't good, but I wonder what their statement is based on. I mean the story takes place in Japan in the 12th century. Court personnel were very regulated in the their behavior and expressiveness. If a viewer expected reactions based on the Western personality that might account for their impression that the acting was poor.

The transfer was "deficient"? That's pure ignorance... Maybe their TV's are poor or not calibrated correctly. The transfer is truly excellent (the reviews by PROFESSIONALS were glowing). I also thought it was well acted (maybe those individuals are not use to theatrical acting).

Just finished watching this and it is truly spectacular in its visuals! Worth a watch if only to "see" the colours of the costumes, exteriors, sets, and so on. The story was fine, though it left me a tiny bit dissatisfied. But wow, it was really beautiful!
