island in the sky

Who is the pilot (actor's name) that turned back when the plane was found because he was low on gas. This has been an ongoing arguement at our local bar. He has been identified by face only as Mica from The Rifleman, Sheriff Coffee from Bonanza, Doc Adams from Gun Smoke and the list goes on.

Please help solve the identity of the actor.

Thanks,

His name was Paul Fix and he did play Mica on the Rifleman. He and John Wayne were friends for many years and made several movies together. Also, if you look closely, you will also find Fess Parker as a copilot. He played Davey Crockett for Walt Disney. Additionally you will also see Touch Connors (wears those goofey glasses), now Mike Connors, who went on to play Mannix during the 80s.

The guy wearing the "ggofy glasses" is NOT Touch Connors. Mike "Touch" Connors is seen as the radio man (VERY briefly) in the plane flown by the pilot who kept snorting nasal spray. I'll have to find the right minute mark on the DVD, but he's there, and then he's gone! The rest of the film you SOMETIMES catch a glimpse of the back or side of his head.

Courage is being scared to death - but saddling up anyway. John Wayne

The actor in the movie was good friend Paul Fix.
However, Paul only had a steady role in THE RIFLEMAN. Doc Adams was played by
Milburn Stone. Paul guested on there a couple of times. I worked the camera's on Gunsmoke so I knew the cast pretty well. I'm not sure who Sheriff Coffee was. I looked under Bonanza and couldn't find Paul's name or any sheriff coffee.

Paul was a genuine actor and good friend.

You can't just tell us that you were a cameraman on Gunsmoke and leave! I think I speak for many fans when I say we would love to hear from you on the Gunsmoke board.

And the actor who played Sheriff Coffee was Ray Teal. I remember his name because I watched that show faithfully as a kid, and I always liked that character.

As God is my witness, I thought turkeys could fly.

Am I the only one to see a young Charles Bronson as a pilot in one of the scenes just after the plane goes down?
