Andy Devine plays Willie Moon (a rescue pilot)

He is worth watching for. He was in many movies usually as a humorous sidekick and was in several Roy Rogers Movies as well as many others. In this movie he gets to play a dramatic role which was rare for him and he does a great job in it.

Also see Devine in PETE KELLY'S BLUES. He plays a corrupt cop in 1920's Kansas City and balances his "aw, shucks" persona with a chilling cruelty.

"We're fighting for this woman's honor, which is more than she ever did."

It was definitely one of the highlights of this film for me, to see Andy Devine in a role with more dimension, one that used him for more than just comic relief. He's heroic here, and a take-charge, strong kind of guy as well as a family man. I'll have to try and see "Pete Kelly's Blues" too, as he was quite good here. (Not that he isn't good as comic relief too; I just appreciate the change!).
