One of the best cold weather films ever.

I wasn't expecting much with this DVD and picked it up on a discount. What a surprise! It's an A-grade classic. Better IMHO than "The High and the Mighty." It's one of the very few films that really bring across deep cold and what it's like to fly in the extreme north. The snow is of course mostly fake and the FX are lame, but the acting and filmmaking are so good they bring home what forty below or more means.

I've felt those kinds of temps up here in the winter and I get the chills watching this film. It's the kind of cold that renders technology useless and begins to play havoc with our understanding of how things function.

If you've ever seen the following, what do you think of:
ICE STATION ZEBRA
SCOTT OF THE ANTARCTIC
DOCTOR ZHIVAGO
The GRUMPY OLD MEN films
THE FAST RUNNER

"We're fighting for this woman's honor, which is more than she ever did."

Actually, no it isn't. This was shot on location in the California wilderness, not some cheap back-lot.

The scenes inside the plane while it was on the ground weren't totally realistic. Not once did you see anyone's breath; one of the characters even said it was colder in the plane than it was outdoors. 

Even without seeing their breath or nitpicking, this was a great survival film. Just as good as The Martian or any modern genre film.
