John Wayne...crying?

Finally caught part of this, but really need to get it on DVD and enjoy it completely. There was a scene where the rescue planes fly overhead, but miss seeing the wreck. John Wayne is overcome with emotion when he realizes he made a mistake, and it might cost him and his crew their lives. His voice falters, and his eyes tear up. It is a very emotional and powerful scene, and I can not remember another movie with John Wayne crying. There are some where he mourns, but not as raw and intense as this. Can anyone remember any others? Powerful acting.

His final scene of all time is up there... in The Shootist the look of disappointment he gives to Ron Howard for shooting the bartender is incredible, of course it changes to relief and then The Duke fades into Movie History.

God, I love that guy.

He cries briefly in "Hurricane Express" (1932) when he finds his father dead after a train wreck.

thanks for the info; one of his i have never got around to watching (strange, since i've always liked the Duke and trains), although it is on my list.

What mistake had he made?

reply

it must have been someone else, John Wayne doesn't cry. Maybe Marion Morrison? ;-)
