They acted like Dooley was the only one lost

Was Dooley the one they cared about finding? That's what it sounded like through the entire movie. It was constantly Dooley this and Dooley that.Nothing about anybody else.

I'd cut them some slack. Within the context of the movie, they were probably using the leader's name to represent all the men - the way someone might say that "Napoleon marched into Russia" while really meaning that it was Napoleon and his whole army.

You probably shouldn't forget the scene where Lloyd Nolan's character speaks on the phone to reassure the wife of one of the lost crewmen, when she breaks down and cries while holding her baby. Nolan has to stay on the line and listen to her sob, so they're certainly aware of the whole crew.

Also, Dooley had been flying longer and had probably been known more closely to the other pilots.

Plus, Dooley was being played by the film's star, John Wayne, who was a much bigger star than any of the other actors playing his crew.

There were wounded soldiers not cargo on the flite from what I have been told. My grandfather was well known & flew many types of operations so as noted above it's probably about John Wayne being the lead character than a slight to the crew members.

The main characters are all airline pilots, at any rate, captains of their ships. Dooley was a pilot and a Captain. In those days airline pilots were a small close knit group, with a high mortality rate. It is natural that they would refer to the captain, because they were all thinking It could be me. They wanted to help Dooley, because they would want the others to help if they were in a similar circumstance.

Simple, Dooley is the Captain. He is the one the others know and when you find Dooley, you find the crew.
