A DVD might be in the offing...or maybe not.

I was reading a column on thedigitalbits.com and ran across an interesting note. On Sept. 2, 2008, Fox released three more titles in its Fox Noir series, including the oft-postponed Boomerang. But a few weeks earlier it had appeared that the release of that film might once again be delayed after various outlets pulled it from their pre-release offers. Around that time a digitalbits columnist, noting this, wrote that if Boomerang were delayed again he thought that Inferno would be substituted as the third release. He didn't write this as if he were simply mentioning a title he thought deserved a DVD release, but rather as what he expected actually would or could be such a "substitute" release. He mentioned no other titles, and nothing about other films he thought, or hoped, might make it out in this series.

Of course, with the release, finally, of Boomerang, the issue was made moot. But the fact that this guy specifically singled out this one film makes it seem as though the actual release of Inferno might -- might -- become reality in the not-too-distant future. It certainly sounded as if the writer had heard that this title was being prepared by Fox, although he didn't state that it was on their release schedule.

Anyway, I pass it along as a possible sign that Inferno might at long last get its first-ever home video release before too much longer. The next batch of Fox Noir DVDs should come out in early December, if the studio keeps to its usual release calendar, so we might find out soon.

Or, maybe not.

UPDATE -- FOUR YEARS LATER.... Inferno is finally coming to DVD on the new Fox Cinema Archives line. Details on my new thread on this board.
