Top 10 Hitchcock Movies

I think this topic is on every other Hitchcock movie message board, so it might as well be here:

1. Vertigo
2. Rebecca
3. Psycho
4. Strangers on a Train
5. North By Northwest
6. The Lady Vanishes
7. Spellbound
8. Dial M for Murder
9. Marnie
10. Rope

Note: Important Hitchcock films that I have not seen
-The Man who knew too much
-Lifeboat
-The Trouble with Harry
-Frenzy

reply

My top 19 would be...

1. Psycho
2. Vertigo
3. North by Northwest
4. The Birds
5. Foreign Correspondent
6. Lifeboat
7. Strangers on a Train
8. The Lady Vanishes
9. 39 Steps
10. I Confess

I still have quite a few to see as well including Rebecca, Suspicion, Spellbound, Notorious, Rope, Trouble With Harry, Marnie, and Frenzy.

IMO you're not missing too much with The Wrong Man. I found it pretty dull...it's Hitchcock and it's still quality but I enjoyed it about as much as Mr. & Mrs. Smith and Jamaica Inn.

In No particular order:

Strangers on a train
North By Northwest
Rear Window
Shadow Of Doubt
The Wrong Man
I Confess
Spellbound
Suspicion
To Catch A Theif
Rope

I really didn't care for 'The Birds' all that much. I recognize its importance as a cultural index, but as a film, it just didn't do much for me.

My top five in order of preference:

Notorious
Rebecca
Dial M For Murder
Shadow of a Doubt
I Confess

I think of his films in groups: the great films, the films that aren't quite so great but any other director would die to have made, and the films that don't work or only partly work. Vertigo transcends all categorization so I just put it at the top:

Greatest:
Vertigo (of course)

Merely great:
Rear Window
North by Northwest
Strangers on a Train
Psycho
39 Steps
Man Who Knew Too Much
Notorious
Shadow of a Doubt
The Birds
Rebecca
Suspicion
Dial M for Murder
To Catch a Thief
Marnie

Partly Great:
The Lodger
Family Plot
Frenzy
Spellbound
Satobteur
Foriegn Correspondent
I Confess
Lifeboat
The Wrong Man
Rope
The Trouble with Harry
Man Who Knew Too Much (30s version)
Torn Curtain
Stage Fright

What was he thinking?
Jamaica Inn
Under Capricorn

Best Hitchcock You Probably Never Saw:
Murder!

Haven't seen em all yet...but am close!

I've seen The Birds but i dunno if i'd put it on my top ten just yet 'cause there's still many i havent seen.

I know i still have more to see like Rebecca, Notorious, The 39 Steps, The Wrong Man, etc. And i'm sure if i had seen these i'd put them on the list as well.

If I had to rank Hitchcock's top 10, I would put them in this order (although it's always subject to change)...

1. Vertigo
2. North By Northwest
3. Notorious
4. Psycho
5. Rear Window
6. The Man Who Knew Too Much (1956)
7. Rebecca
8. To Catch a Thief
9. The Wrong Man
10. The 39 Steps

And think about the three years Hitch had in 1958, 1959, and 1960. He wound up making three movies (Vertigo, North By Northwest, and Psycho), all of which are among the greatest films of all time. Has any other filmmaker ever come close to such a feat?

reply

1) Rear Window
2) Strangers on a Train
3) Rope
4) Psycho
5) Shadow of a Doubt
6)Vertigo

8) Birds, The

10) North by Northwest
