Bacall steals the film!

I think that Betty Grable is cute, but not a great actress. Marilyn Monroe was just a pretty face. In Lauren Bacall's "By Myself" Bacall says that on the set Monroe continously needed her coach. I really don't think she acted well in this film. I think Lauren Bacall stole this film with her good timing, sayin her lines well, sophistication, wit, and just playing the part darn good.

I was pleasantly surprised with this film. Friend's of mine were flabbergasted that I had not seen this movie, but I was afraid Marilyn Monroe would monopolize it. Luckily, she didn't. Lauren Becall was the savior.

Lauren Bacall was great in this movie. I loved her reference to the "old fella" in The African Queen, which was of course her husband Humphrey Bogart.

reply

Are you kidding? Lauren Bacall was great in it, but Marilyn stole the show completely! Her comic timing was the best in the movie, especially when she was 'reading' the book upside down without her glasses! lol.

"You DO wear it on your head. I just LOVE finding new places to wear diamonds!"

reply

I have to agree,Marilyn stole the show she was so funny, and I love her scences with David Wayne (Freddie) they are so cute together and he dosen't treat her like a dumb blonde no wonder she falls for him! I think Bacall is great but Marilyn is the standout (no pun intended).

reply

I love both of them! This was my first Marilyn movie, so I was surprised at her great comic timing. (The walking into the wall scene gets me every time!) It's hard to compare them, since the characters were so different. Personally, I think the ensemble was fantastic.

reply

I agree...Bacall was great, but Marilyn effortlessly walks away with this film.

reply

What a comedic genius! No one's ever thought of reading a book upside as funny as before! How original and hilarious! Certainly Lauren's immense talent can't compare to that.

reply

Well, I totally agree. I can't really understand why this is thought of as "a marilyn movie" or why Marilyn is on the cover of the DVD when bacall had more face-time than marilyn as was a much more important part of the picture. Even Grable better probably had a greater role in the movie than Marilyn.

reply

I agree with those who said they thought Marilyn stole the show. No question about it for me, hands down. Personally, I didn't really like Lauren's character; she seemed too stiff and uptight for me... though, I suppose thats why they call it acting.

It's true Marilyn needed an acting coach present on Millionaire (for most, if not all, her movies though) but it was because she was deeply insecure because of the way she'd been abused all her life - she was very dependant of certain people, her acting coach being one of them. Plenty of great Hollywood actresses today use acting coaches, I don't really think it takes away from your acting ability or makes you less of a credible actor. It simply enhances what you already have.

Marilyn Monroe was hilarious in this. It gets me every time when she says, "I thought someone might've belted him one!" about her one-eyed date

Bacall did NOT steal this movie... it was allll Marilyn... this movie is classed as a romantic comedy, while Bacall had small parts of romance Marilyn had the most comedic parts. i honestly dont think this movie woulda been even remotely as good without her.

OMG she looked like 50 million dollars (give or take a few million) in that purple evening dress she wore with Stewart (ive got a poster of her in that dress but its in B/W!?!? arghhh)... and she looked soooooo beautiful when they were all having dreams in bed, she look magnificent, pink lipstick, hair just lovely (not that its ever not nice) ide just love to wake up to that face everyday. oh why wasnt i born 70 years ago, and why dont i own Texas.

my fav parts are... the following of the wrong waiter.

when she wore that stunning red what looked like a corset at the fashion show, and clipped the front of the step with those clear heals, done very well.

when Freddie was in his spying outfit and opened the door for Pola, she took her glasses of so quick she didnt get to see who he was.

the WHOLLLLE part in the plane but mainly "Now look, if your worried about me, I'll tell you right now before you put them on, I already think your quite a strudel"
to which she delightfully replied "honestly?"

If any of the "I don't rate Monroe" brigade think that anyone buys the video or DVD of this film to watch anyone else but Marilyn then they're just fooling themselves. The other two were famous. Marilyn went beyond that. She was an icon. She had that indefinable something that all great stars have. If any of today's present generation have ever heard of this film then it's because of one person. Marilyn.

It was a very funny movie all of the 3 leads were equally good in their parts. One thing about Bacall who I like a lot is that she is a good sport when she called Bogey that old fella. But all of them were excellent and no one stole the movie, that is why it was so good. I always get this movie mixed up with Diamonds are a Girls Best Friend. Same plot same actress, Monroe. But Jane Russell and the dance scene in the Gym when the guys pay more atention to each other then her is the is the best scene of both movies.

reply

Yes, Marilyn was beautiful, and adorable, and hilarious in this movie, but I don't think she carried it. I'm drawn more to Bacall because she had a different kind of charisma. She really was sexy, seductive, yet tough. She always reminded me of a cat, kind of exotic-looking, and with that deep purr of a voice. I love both actresses though. The only one I didn't care for was Grable. Her part could've been played by almost anyone.

reply

I watch it for her.

The others are terrific too, but it's Bacall I enjoy watching the most.

reply

I agree. I'm a fan of both Lauren and Marilyn, but Marilyn wasn't as giften an actor as people make her out to be. She was beautiful and tragic, but she was a one-trick pony.

reply

wow for real? did you read some of the above comments? she was a comedic genius! if lauren tried to be funny and hold the book upside she would just look ridiculous, but marilyn was good at playing silly AND smart characters, lauren was just good at playing smart imo.

plus lets face it, its no contest to who is prettier!

lauren bacall definately pissed me of. she was such a biotch... and who couldnt love marilyn

reply

I thought this movie was hilarious and now have so much more respect for Lauren Bacall. I can see now why she's so upset with today's Hollywood.... Honestly I thought they were all really funny. Marilyn does have really good timing and uses her voice so well. Bacall, is so sharp and witty it's amazing, but I really found myself laughing the most during the scenes with Betty Grable in the mountains in Maine. When she said "I thought that just meant you were from Texas", I almost died. Classic.

reply

I love this movie so much. I think that it's hard to judge if any one girl ran away with the film because they are all so different. You couldn't have switched Bacall and Monroe's roles because it wouldn't have worked nor Bacall and Grable, although perhaps there was less difference between Grable and Monroe. Certainly neither blonde could have played the part of Shatze.

reply

I have to disagree! Bacall is astounding in the picture, but then so are Grable and Monroe. As someone already said, the film's success is determined by all THREE stars - they each made the movie appealing to different people and that was the secret of it's success. And I have to say, with Marilyn on screen it's difficult for me to pay any attention to anything or anyone else - no matter how good her supporting cast may be.

A great movie, made great by ALL of it's stars - not just one.

I saw this movie becouse of Marilyn. and back then I did not know who Lauren Bacall was, and I was so pissed that Lauren stole the movie and Marilyn was left behind. But now when I have become a fan of Bacall I like this movie. This movie is more of a Bacall movie than a Monroe

I happened to catch this movie on TV yesterday. Though I know Bacall is a acting great, everytime she was on screen i got annoyed with her. Her voice is so manly and she seemed so ridgid. the scene i did enjoy with her is the one in her bedroom before her wedding. marilyn was so much fun in the plane scene...i wish i would have tivoed that so i could watch it again!

I have to agree. I find Lauren Bacall just too butch to think of her as a sex symbol. I don't find her convincing in a romantic leading role.

I know that there a lot of classic movies buffs out there that just swoon over the notion of the Bacall-Bogart liasion that think I am crazy or stupid, but I am sorry, she just doesn't turn me on.

reply

Are you joking? Marilyn is the mannish one. Talking like a little girl and sticking your cleavage in everyone's face and needing 4 layers of makeup doesnt make you sexy, a sex symbol or feminine.

It's fine if you dont like her but she isn't "butch" at all. Butch is more like Katharine Hepburn or from today, Michelle Rodriguez. http://i2.listal.com/image/1121821/600full-lauren-bacall.jpg she's a great romantic lead but preferably for a less funny type of movie. More of a serious one or one at least with dry, dark humor.

I loved all three of them in this movie. Maybe Lauren overshadowed the others, but I wouldn't say Marilyn and Betty were any worse than her.

reply

I loved them all also, but I think Bacall definately had some of the funniest lines.
