Feel Sad for William Powell / JD?

Did anyone besides me feel genuinely sad for William Powell / JD?

this movie is so frothy and so much fun I want to enjoy it 100%, but 2% of me always feels sad for JD. Powell's performance is so good ... he really makes me feel for that character.

I hate how he's treated at the wedding.

I was sad for William Powell/JD as well. Maybe because I find older
distinguished gentlemen very sexy; and JD definitely fit the bill!

He wanted someone he could be comfortable and grow old with, and I think
that in all reality, Lauren Bacall's character was too young for him.

Plus I think she ended up with the guy who was not going to let her run
all over him!!

YES! I think she made a mistake - because she never allowed herself to see him with her heart.

I agree... I feel like maybe they should have just had him not come back or something. Or maybe had Schatze care a bit and they could have had a nice, character-building few moments where they both realized things about themselves, but that they weren't meant for each other (JD could have gone out on a happier note...). lol It was nice that one of the millionaires they were chasing wasn't a jerk, but it did bring the just-fun level down a bit. But I don't know, maybe the movie is better for it.
Definitely a fun movie, but William Powell is pretty much my favorite, so that's partly why I can't help being biased toward his character... He was just so nice. And there was only closure for him within the scope of the story since he was very much a secondary character. But he was a deep enough character that I was wondering what happened to him when the movie ended. I thought the smelling the cigar thing was a crazy good moment for not really being important. I was very moved. lol
I'm sure he was ultimately happy. :)

If he had been in a movie today we would have a quick scene where a woman comes up to him at the wedding or after the wedding where we would assume that he was alright.

reply

I thought he was gorgeous, and far and away the sexiest man in the whole film.

Sort of makes you wonder if the mother of Lauren Bacall's character was still around, and single?

"I'm not reckless . . . I'm skillful!"

I felt the same.
I mean, genre conventions and the formulaic plot dictated from the beginning that Schatze would end up with Brookman, so I kept thinking "But what then are going to do about JD Henley who is way too nice and sympathetic to be just dumped somewhere along the way?" I really didn't want him to get hurt, but knew it would have to happen somehow.
The way they resolved the situation - him not appearing to be hurt all that much after being pretty much left standing at the altar - hmmm, I guess I can live with that. Although I still believe he was the most decent man of them all.

I came to this board to see if anyone felt the same way--I just watched it on netflix instant play and felt so bad esp. when JD was standing outside the door!

reply

I feel for JD, but at the same time, you could tell he knew better, when the guy walks up to him when he is standing there and asks him if he's sure.. watch his facial expression... I think he was a bit relieved... hurt, but relieved.

reply

I know! He was so heartbroken at the end. Decent fellow who shouldn't have come back to propose to Schatze.

I adored J.D. too but it was a good thing their marriage never happened.
I think Schatze had feelings for him - and that she did like him - but she was not in love with him.
Sad for him but ... if I lived then I'd be waving my hand and calling "Me! Me!" ๎€ฆ

reply

Of course. Good thing the wedding was called off beforehand so that they wouldn't have to go through the trouble of divorce papers, etc.

Yes, absolutely! I loved William Powell's character - loved him since the 30s! I think a nice twist would have been for him to run into a lovely woman at the wedding closer to his own age and maybe they could have hit it off quickly. The movie just creates this really unkind and sad unceremonious dump of a really nice, classy guy - the best of the bunch, I think. Hard to feel good about that.
