What form is the original inspiration

Posting this on this board because it's more likely to be read and by someone who might know.

I've heard "The Wax Works", the work that inspired this, Mystery and the technically the remake described in two ways.

One saying it was an unpublished short story and the other that it was a play. Any idea what form it actually was?
