The Hitch-Hiker ~ hmmmm 7 of 10?

This was rated 7 out of 10?
Hmmmm...I don't think so.
One thing's for certain though..this one certainly didn't keep me in suspense, like some old movies do.
I found it so weak that half-way though viewing, I just stopped watching.
I had no interest in seeing what happens.
I hate to say bad things about what was probably a classic to some viewers, really, but this one just didn't work for me.
Sorry...to those who like these old 'classic' films...

If you gave up halfway through this brief movie, your opinion shouldn't count. It reminds me of people who walk out of a theater then moan and grown. I've seen movies start out not-so-good and end up surprising me a lot.

I'm only about halfway through, and I know that I will remember this movie and be looking forward to seeing it again!

How can a movie in which you've been hijacked by a crazy serial killer be dull?! Sheesh! People must be pretty smug about themselves if they can't find the fear and dread in this! All of the potential victims... Each time, we're not sure if he will kill or not. He's out in a region where it will take a while to find bodies, so anything is possible.

Besides, you have three leads who are amazing character actors!

These are not impossibly heroic guys! They're sensible men who know they must bide their time. And, I like how they leave clues along the way to make themselves memorable. So often in movies, we see the protagonist(s) taking insane chances of overpowering the bad guy and, of course, succeeding even when it's ridiculous that they do. So, nowadays, too many are in the "Die Hard" mindset. In the store, he could have taken the chance with his plan, but he realized the potential for father and child to be injured or killed.

I always read in forums how "I would have done..." whatever in a dangerous situation. Baloney! No one can predict what s/he will do! You aren't going to become Chuck Norris, Sylvester Stallone or any other action hero! Picture yourself in those men's place. Again, how can you NOT be at least nervous about what could happen?! Maybe you're one of those couch potato videogamers who have become used to mowing down little figures on the screen, plus all the other imaginary computer stuff. You detach yourself from humanity through that and don't "get" such characters as in this film because they are acting so believably, not like your controlled cartoons.

How could this NOT keep you in suspense?! Sheesh! I want to know how it will play out! You couldn't get me to leave the room now, and I haven't eaten yet today! My stomach (and diabetes) can wait!

I applaud the direction of Ida Lupino! I like ALL her work~in front of or in back of the camera.

To each his own ~ that's why we have message boards in IMDB!
I still think what I saw was a dud, and I have better things to do with my time then watch more of a movie that I am not enjoying.
Hey...try EATING, by the way. You're a &^%$% diabetic {like me!}, for God's sake!

I still haven't gotten around to eating. They tell you to eat three meals a day AND a snack! That's impossible! I never ate that way, and I don't get hungry enough to do it. The movie was much more interesting than trying to figure out what I'm going to have. Besides, it has to duke it out with fibro, CFIDS, congestive heart failure and the rest. The blood sugar just does what it wants to do no matter what I try; it's just a rollercoaster ride.

I'll stick in an edit here: In the prior film on TCM, "Homicide" (1949), one of the main characters is a diabetic, a fact that is pivotal to the story in a couple of ways. That really surprised me.

(back to my original post...)
I LIKE this movie! I definitely want to see it again. It might not be one I'd tape, but it wouldn't be a problem to do so since it's so brief. I generally can fit from three to four films on a tape, so it would be nice to set aside a tape for these litte B movies that are so rare. I'll say I found it so much better than the CGI actionfests they've been delivering for far too long. How can you have tension and suspense when you know it's all done on a computer with the occasional stunt person? Now THAT is boring, without a bit of a scare. And, they claim that's the sort of movie ADHD people like?! I have untreated ADHD. Bourne, TDK and other such are pitiful films to me, CGI/stunt-filled mishmoshes. They seem like those videogames people are so crazy about being put on the big screen, not real movies.

This film was crafted and cared about very obviously, not thrown at the screen for overblown prices. I wish Ida Lupino would have filmed more noir-style works, as this showed great style.

BTW: I changed my score to a 10 to counterbalance the haters. It's such a tiny bit of help, but maybe others who enjoy it will give it extra points.

It was a dud. I've stated several times, compare this to The Sadist. The Sadist keeps you wondering what's going to happen next, and you actually like the protagonists.
