Rock the Pacifist (Spoilers)

It is interesting that Rock Hudson stives to be be a non-gun-toting pacifist, but then is pushed to anger and retribution when his fiance kidnapped.

But then circumstances allow him to remain "innocent":

+ Jess kills one of the gang in town (amazingly not crippling or stampeding the horses they are shooting under.)

+ Slayton and gang kill two of their own, Curly and Jess.

+ The Indian takes care of everyone else (the rather cold-blooded killing of the guy with canteens, two running out the back door, two riding out of the corral, and Slayton with the knife.)

Rather convenient.

At the beginning he says that he stays in his own backyard, which would apply not just to his land but to his family and fiancee. So Slayton intruded on his 'backyard,' he may be a pacifist in the sense that he is not going to fight in matters that dont concern him or his land. But his fiancee was kidnapped so that does concern me. I would say I am non-violent but if someone was to come and hurt my family I would never just stand by and let it happen. All humans are prone to violence in one way or another.

theil the thing about the Indian Johash (played by Pat Hogan) is really the main hero in that he kills six of the outlaws all near the end of the movie as you said. The ironic thing is that Hogan had a big part but was not even in the credits.

Although he did not believe in violence, Ben only used it when he was morally obligated to such as when trying to save Jennifer or in the final shootout. The violence was justifiable compared to Frank's reckless violence by killing defenceless people.
